A motion was filed yesterday by Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene to have Mike Johnson removed from his position as Speaker of the House. She calls it “more of a warning than a pink slip” and claims there is not a set time frame to move forward on the action. This comes after Johnson worked out a compromise with the Democrats to keep the government from shutting down. Kevin McCarthy was previously removed from the Speakership–initiated by Matt Gaetz–when he worked across the aisle to stop a government shut down. On Thursday, Greene put out a Tweet saying that “Our Republican majority is a complete failure”, and that was followed by another saying that she is “done” with Mike Johnson because of the compromise.
Amidst this, Wisconsin Representative Mike Gallagher has announced that he will resign from his position in the House in April, frustrated by the actions (and inactions) of his party in that chamber. That brings the Republicans to the slimmest of majorities as they continue to fight among themselves while also carrying out their misguided attempts to impeach Joe Biden which has produced no evidence of wrongdoing after a year of investigations. The Republicans in the House continue to reveal themselves as a broken party that that is not series about governing and that seems to be imploding on a daily basis. Marjorie Taylor Greene will get a little more publicity from this and a few sound bites that she will campaign on, but ultimately her actions could prove fatal to the GOP.
